I thought I might provoke some extra reaction with my teasing of ulti players
and promotion of disc golf, but my fanning of the flame wars has been
Gaviscon-ed by Emily's calm and rational comments.

We never bothered with all this rehydration lark in my ultimate playing days in
the 70's and 80's. To be fair though, I did get cramp at just about every
tournament!!!

I've wizened up now of course.

It's not really a walking distance issue, it's when games are back to back
when it becomes a problem. My understanding is (and I'm willing to be
corrected) that people should be getting on board something in the region of
10 litres a day when the weather is as it was at Mansfield.

That comes from the following breakdown, because it sounds like a lot by
itself,

2 as a base rate
1 per 5 degrees above 20 (and it was near 30 over the weekend)
1 per hour on the pitch.

And that last point is kind of key, when you have a back to back games
especially on the far pitches (which from memory are further than 300m from
the pavilion at Mansfield and plenty of venues) you play upwards of 3 hours
of ultimate, that's at least three litres that you have to have for
yourself. Personally I wouldn't want to carry that and all the rest of my
gear and think I shouldn't have to when I pay tour fees that should cover
having water by the pitch. Now in fairness I missed this year's event at
Mansfield, because of my dissertation, but wanted to point out that people
really need much more water than you might think.

How about thinking outside the endzone box? Those ulti players who lack the
athleticism to walk 300m to fetch water before or after a game, should maybe
consider a less runny-roundy game like disc golf.

Entry fees are no lower, so can't help on that contentious area, but for the
British Open you can actually win quite a bit of cash if you get good
enough. There will be approx £1500 up for grabs at the 30th British Open at
Quarry Park on May31 - June1.
