Hi Doug, Buzz Bullets and MUD of Japan are the current World Club title holders in Open and Women's respectively, so that should tell you something.
From what I learned of women's ultimate in Japan from asking a few club players at Worlds '06, it is roughly 4 times bigger than in the UK (60 competitive women's club teams). I'm guessing you could probably extrapolate in a similar way for Open? Anyway, I'm willing to bet ultimate in Japan is a fair bit bigger than in the UK. However, I also know most of Japanese ultimate is strongly developed through Universities, and most club teams have close links to a Uni team. Therefore, I don't know how easy it would be to find a team in cities without a university. So depends how small these places are that you are intending to visit.
