I work for GAP SPORTS and since starting with them in September I have set up
an Ultimate Frisbee Coaching placement in South Africa which I thought might
interest a number of people – either for a Gap Year, summer holiday or career
breaks.
At the moment we run masses of sports coaching placements (swimming, football,
tennis, hockey, netball, basketball etc) in schools/teams in Port Elizabeth,
South Africa. Volunteers come away with us for 4-16 weeks, they live with
fellow Gap Sporters (who are doing various other sports and non-sports
placements) and each day they go off to the different schools to teach the kids
there. You do not need to be an expert or have any official qualification to
coach; you just need to have a love for your sport, lots of enthusiasm, a basic
knowledge of the game and a passion to share it with those less fortunate
(obviously if you have done the UKUA coaching programme that is only going to
stand you in good stead). The minimum age for our volunteers is 18 years old
and we take people, as mentioned above, on Gap Years, summer holidays and
career breaks. We also run non-sports placements like teaching, art and design,
care-work in orphanages etc and people can do a mixture of sport and non-sport
placements if they like. Trips costs £1195 for 4 weeks and an extra £100 per
week after that.
So if you are a keen Ultimate Frisbee player, why not spend some time teaching
the sport to young athletes from South African townships? Although the South
African Flying Disc Association (SAFDA) has been around for over 20 years,
Ultimate Frisbee is still very underdeveloped in South Africa. This placement
therefore requires enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers who can be proactive
at the grassroots end of the game. You will work with pupils of all ages and
genders and your role will be to introduce and promote the sport to them.
