Hi All
UKUA Junior Outdoor Nationals 2008 took place in North Birmingham at the
weekend, and was a success despite the rain and then wind that battered us over
the 2 days. (If it's any consolation to those that were here, it has been fine
and fairly still since you left - I think you bring the weather with you!) It
was the biggest Junior Outdoor tournament in the UK yet, with 27 teams
attending. The Junior game is expanding (in terms of number of teams and
players), and improving (in terms of standard of play) month by month at the
moment. This is shown not just in the total number of teams at the weekend,
but fact that only one of the teams in the top 3 this year finished in the top
8 last year - indeed Kent didn't even have a Junior team to enter 12 months ago!
So 'Good Work!' to all the coaches and players who are working so hard with
their teams to achieve this!
Huge thanks to all those that helped over the weekend - setting up, clearing
up, getting water, Kev and Tom for the schedule, Gaynor Tracy and Claire for
the catering, Sutton Rugby Club for the venue... and all of you who played for
sorting out the litter before you left - when I went out onto the back field
after the presentation it was spotless, and I've rarely seen that at a
tournament. Thank you!
There is a fair bit of lost property which I will try and find the time to sort
and catalogue tonight, and email out later on. On this subject, is the issue of
discs - some people seem to think that a disc lying around at a tournament is
fair game to pick up and take home. I know that 3 discs (one of which was meant
for the MVP of the final) were taken from where my stuff was in the foyer, and
a couple of other people have enquired about missing discs - and there are none
in last property. Taking away a disc that isn't yours is stealing. Don't do it.
Here are the results. Teams were asked to give 3 Spirit votes, giving 3 points
to one team, 2 to another, and 1 point to their third choice. In brackets after
each team name is the number of Spirit votes they got. Every team got some
votes, and a low number doesn't necessarily mean you are a poorly spirited team
- every game might have been fantastic and you might have been everyone's
fourth choice with little to choose between all the teams. But I think it is
worth recognising and celebrating those teams that did rack up a number of
points.
