I'm still in bed at the moment feeling somewhat sorry for those
without the forethought or flexibility to have booked today off after
3 days of non-stop action at the 9th annual Copa Cabana 2009AD here in
Nottingham UK.

I've heard a few people say it was the best yet and I can say it was
definitely close. So many memorable moments were completely erased
repeatedly through over-indulgence and yet I am still left with more
than I can convey. Personal highlights were the PS3 Rock Band video
game competition with some amazing performances, seeing somebody
wrestling intensely with the giant cardboard tardis, the Sci-Fi people
who won the best dressed by coming as Transformers that actually
transformed and lastly seeing the eventual winners of the tournament
leaving the Copa party as I awoke for breakfast on Monday morning.

The final was actually a demonstration of a very high quality of
Ultimate in spite of a clash with EUCR-W in Loughborough. In fact I
would say that it helped because it's ending on Sunday provided the
Copa's Sunday night party with a new flock and fresh legs for some
teams on Monday morning.

Immediate congratulations must go to Bigger Than You for their second
win of Copa Cabana and a big well-done to Whipscar for a great final.

Awards were also given for best "Rock Band" (Kinky Wizards), best
Karaoke (Singer for Kinky Wizards oddly), final MVP (MadK), Spoon
(Hullumni), Plate (Mistura [Pickup Team]), and of course Spirit which
was won by Disc-guise.

Some operational points of interest was that the amount of rubbish
left behind was much much lower than in past years. We provided
bright blue bin liners all weekend for rubbish (200 in total) and
yellow bin liners for recycling and people were great about using
them. The player gift of the recycled plastic mugs meant the bar had
much less rubbish to clean up. I used the WFDF spirit system this
year and got a different spirit winner if I used a median of the
results instead of an average. Interested to hear comment on that.
In spite of having a nearly £10k budget this year, the actual money
taken as club profit from running the event was an all time low. I'm
happy to provide the financial details to anyone interested. We
decided this year to do it correct and purchase comprehensive event
insurance. We also had two dedicated first-aiders and an on-site
ambulance everyday. We had night-time security and a dog (although
the dog probably could come on his own next time). All of these
things raise the costs. We also doubled the number of portaloos. It
was an exercise to get a handle on how Copa 2010 will go. Copa 2010?
you ask...

This is still very much in the planning stages however....2010 is the
10th anniversary of the Copa Cabana. We already have 16 extremely
high quality pitches booked at the Grove Farm site. This site was part
of a bid for WUCC 2010 as well and has hosted mixed tour once.
Camping will still be at the same site except with no pitches. Pitch
1 will instead be a single massive Copa Party Tent resembling
something more like the Paganello big top. Next year is going to be
HUGE if it all comes together. It's also going to be on the same long
weekend again August 27th to August 30th 2010.

We'll be sending out some feelers about all of these plans in the
months to come as things develop as we also know the WUCC is on along
with other large events so we want to keep the excitement about our
event brewing for the next year.

I hope everyone had a good time and Copa Cabana 2009 and I hope to see
everyone back in 2010.

Regards,
Steve and Dene, Copa TDs
and of course Flyght Club
