This weekend saw 26 teams compete in Wolverhampton
in the u17 (year 11 and younger) national indoor championships. This was a
record number of teams competing at this level, and an increase in the number
of different schools competing.

We decided to experiment with super peer pools for the top 6 teams to give
Airbadgers some competitive games on the first day, but after they bagelled
their first 4 opponents there were doubts whether anyone could give them a
game. Up stepped Flux who promptly beat them and set up a three way tie at the
top. Lower down, NC Hammer and Evolution won their pools along with Airbadgers
2 and Airbadgers 4 proving just how strong Ultimate is at their school. The new
format seemed popular with teams at all levels with the top teams having far
more competitive games before the knockout stage, and the lower teams not
having to be wiped out by the top teams.

The final was a repeat of last year's final (after Flux narrowly won a tough
semi final against Arctic 1 who had beaten
them on the first day) but this time Flux knew Airbadgers could be beaten. The
final got underway and the teams traded with very few mistakes from either
side. Flux scored most of their points through Will Jackson hucking to Will
Allen who manages to come down with everything (his aggression and positioning
more than making up for his 'only average' height). Airbadgers moved the disc
so confidently on 'O' and though they shared out the points, Matt Grimes and
Robbie Kyme made most of the assists. The break came at 4-3 when Airbadgers
capitalised on a poor throw from Flux, and their O just never gave Flux the
chance to close the gap. Final score was 7-6 to Airbadgers with Robbie Kyme
being awarded MVP. Spirit of the game went to Brighton.

On Saturday we ran a mini tournament for 6 teams made up of
year 7 and younger players. This meant the oldest player on the pitch was just
12 and a half years old and the fact we had 45 players young enough is
incredible. Airbadgers have won this match for the last 3 years but Ocelots
have an exceptional group of youngsters this year who proved too strong winning
the final 9-4.

Any lost property found at the tournament will be taken to
the national junior indoors held at the same venue on March 6/7. After that it
will just get binned if not claimed.

Many thanks to Vaughnie for running the tournament. It’s a
fantastic venue for indoor ultimate and we will be hosting the u17 and u20
tournaments there for the next couple of years. Thanks to Tom for the seedings,
and for all the teachers, coaches and parents for giving up so much time to
support their players and enabling this tournament to be the success that it
is.
