A record 36 junior teams competed in the 2010 junior indoor national championships back in March. This event has grown every year and may have to start restricting the number of 3rd, 4th and even 5th teams that can enter if it is to continue as a single national event - but that's a nice problem to have.
Peer pools for the top 12 teams threw up few surprises while the open pools below gave everyone else the opportunity to gain in confidence and challenge the top 12 in the cross-overs. Airbadgers proved their strength yet again by getting their second team up into the top 8. The semi final between NC Originals and Flux 1 went to sudden death with Flux just holding their nerve to book their chance to revenge the 9-0 thrashing they received from Airbadgers in the pool stage. The final began with both teams very tentative on offence and some massive Ds. With Airbadgers 2-0 up, the next point had 13 turn-overs before Airbadgers scored. This match was all about the defences, but suddenly Airbadgers remembered their easy scores (Ben Ryan hucking to Josh Kyme) and their patience offence mostly through Borat, Jarrod and Ed. Good supporting roles too by Turtle, Matt Grimes and others. Flux had put so much effort into trying to stop them early on and they did put in a very good performance, but Airbadgers really are in a different league and they ran out 9-3 winners. With so many Airbadgers playing for GB Juniors (and virtually their entire 2nd team will be the core of the GB U17s team), the crucial question will be about whether they can finally win the outdoor national title to go with their indoor dominance. Well done to Vaughnie for successfully running this event again.
