Cork Open Ultimate Frisbee Tournament 2010 Invitation

Cork Open, Ireland’s premier ultimate frisbee club event, is back. This year
will see some dramatic changes to the tournament. Due to the bad weather
last year leading to a lot of damage to the pitches we have had to move the
tournament (from October back to September) and also have had to reduce the
number of teams that enter (from 24 teams to 16). However, there’s one thing
that isn’t going to change, and that’s the quality of the tournament. The
fact that the tournament is in September means we will have better weather
and more sunlight, and the fact that there’s less teams means that the
standard will be a lot higher and the schedule will enable all teams to
experience high standard games all weekend.

We understand that the new dates for the tournament clash with some other
events, but are confident that we can still attract the same selection of
high standard Irish and European teams and produce another sensational
event.
Tournament

The two day Cork Open 2010 tournament will be held on the weekend of
Saturday 18th/Sunday 19th September at University College Cork’s main
outdoor sports venue “the farm”.
Teams

The tournament will feature 16 teams including Ireland’s top club and
university teams as well as a mixture of foreign teams from all over Europe.
In the past the tournament has attracted teams from all over Europe
including teams from the UK, Belgium, Luxemburg, Italy and others. There
will also be a pickup team which will most likely feature players from even
further afield.
Schedule

Because of the reduction in the number of teams this year, rather than
having a peer-pooled schedule, we will go for a more orthodox pooling system
with 4 pool groups with 4 teams in each. The standard of teams will be of a
high enough standard to ensure that all of these games will be competitive.
After the pool stages there will be crossovers to establish the top 8 and
bottom 8 tiers. Sunday will then see the quarters, semis and final of each
tier.

The aim of Cork Open maintains to be offering a very high standard of
ultimate with Irelands best clubs and universities facing off against the
best of Europe. Each team will be guaranteed at least 6 games with the
eventual finalists playing 7 games. The specifics of game time etc will be
confirmed closer to the date.
Player fee

The player fee for the tournament is €20 per person (for team players and
pickup players) which includes a guaranteed 6 games, breakfast on both
mornings, catered lunch and entry into the parties both nights. Teams will
have to confirm the number of players they will be bringing before the
tournament to ensure we have sufficient time to order the food etc.
Food

Breakfast will consist of a variety of items and will be provided on both
mornings of the tournament as part of the player fee. Lunch will consist of
a lunch pack including a sandwich, drink, fruit, chocolate bar and crisps
and will be provided through a catering company as part of the player fee.
Water will also be available at the pitches for free and there is also a
water tap on site.
Dietary requirements

If any player has specific dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, lactose
intolerant, celiac etc) please let us know in advance of the tournament so
we can try our best to accommodate for this.
Parties

There will be a welcoming party held in Cork city centre on the Friday night
(venue to be confirmed) and a party held on the Saturday night in Cyprus
Avenue (bar/nightclub) in Cork city centre.
Accommodation

UCC players will provide floor space in their houses for as many players as
possible, with preference going to teams that are travelling a long
distance. There is only a limited amount of floor space so others will have
to stay in hostels/hotels. Anyone who is planning on staying in a
hostel/hotel can ask us for a list of places.

If you have a team that are interested in coming to Cork for the tournament,
or if you are yourself interested in coming over to play with the pickup
team in the tournament, send an email to [email protected] expressing your
interest. In this email include a bit of information about your team (ie,
where your team are from, what level of experience your players have,
whether you will be requesting free floor space etc).

Look forward to hearing from you.
