So Andy's interpretation isn't quite right. In that last category - which clearly does sometimes cause some confusion - the idea is to give a score for whether the opponents' sotg was better than your own team's. It doesn't necessarily bear any relationship with the scores in the other 4 categories which are "absolute" scores of 0-4 relating to only the other team's behaviour. (I.e. you might well give the other team scores of 3 and 4 whilst still - quite correctly - deciding that your own team's sotg was just as good - which in turn would lead you to put a 2 in the last column.)
I guess if all team behaviour was constant from game to game, and all the people filling in the scores were always accurate at rating their opponents relative to themselves, then we would expect the average in the last category to be 2. So if the average is above 2, then in fact, we tend to see our opponents as slightly better than us... Yawn... does it really matter? We started trying to get TDs to collect and publish this info after a worldwide group of volunteers had worked on creating the categories on behalf of WFDF - the aim was to work towards an objective description of what good sotg should mean. Sometimes teams that are deemed by their opponents to be playing with poor sotg actually don't realise - and certainly even if they have an idea - they maybe aren't really sure why. So the idea of the categories (although it can be a bit of a pain) is try to create a mechanism where a team can identify areas where other teams are not so happy about their approach: e.g. lack of rules knowledge, too physical, unfriendly & rude, or whatever. My sense is that whilst it would be difficult to prove, the process of collecting and publishing these scores does help to get people to think about what they're doing. We intend to keep doing this, and will continue trying to make it easier for players to hand in their scores and get more detailed feedback from the system etc. If anyone fancies writing an i-phone and/or android app to help with the data collection that would be great... let me know! :-) Si > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > On Behalf Of Andrew Godber > Sent: 24 January 2011 15:12 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [BD] UKU Indoor Nationals 2010/11- Results > > Best stats out of the full spirit votes: > > Average scores for Rules Knowledge, Fouls, Fair-Mindedness, Positive > Attitude - all around 3 > Average score for Their Spirit v Ours - just over 2. > > So even when we acknowledge that the opposition have been good > spirited, we just can't let them be as good as us..... > > https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0ApVbyKT7aMgndFJubnY2S1NqVUlWan > hTQmZ0ZDFhdEE&hl=en&output=html > > Good work on publishing the spirit votes though. > > Andy > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > On Behalf Of [email protected] > Sent: 24 January 2011 15:01 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [BD] UKU Indoor Nationals 2010/11- Results > > Hello BD > > UK Ultimate Indoor Nationals took place this weekend at the > Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield.
