As someone who plays for 2 teams who are either 'lower down in the tour
rankings' * or 'have little/no experience of higher level play'* I have to
disagree with a number of the points raised by Scott Martin.
As a member of Devon 3 I really don't find that either myself or my team
mates 'detest contact of any type' indeed, as primarily a development team I
often find a similar attitude to contact as that experienced in my other
team, Second Wind, which is still primarily made up of people who work for
the Met. Office here in Exeter.
In Second Wind we try to encourage 'average' people to find a love of
ultimate by trying something new. This has resulted in people such as myself
who had never met the sport before taking it up at the age of 44 and
footballers, rugby players and the like also playing. Prior to this last
year, Second Wind has competed in very few tournaments, but we managed to
collect the Spirit Trophy at Disco Inferno this year.
I strongly disagree that football is a 'non contact' sport at all, indeed at
lower levels it is often much more physical than at higher; something I
myself find to be true of Ultimate, and something we often find somewhat
difficult to instill in the footballers trying out the sport, or those who
take part in the games which we in Second Wind have managed to get instated
as part of Sports Day at the Met. Office.
To Quote - 'I'm not against an 'out of twenty' system, but I absolutely HATE
the final question of 'your spirit compared to theirs' and have never even
heard mention of a team who has marked their own team down in favour of
giving points to the other without somewhat ignoring the question to do so.'
You have now! As Captain of Santa's Little Helpers at Iron 5 in December,
(Spirit winners again) My team did exactly that. I personally don't see this
as saying "We were poorly spirited" but, especially in this instance, as a
way of saying "they had more opportunity to call themselves out/ call fouls
against themselves and didn't shy away from doing so"

Your 'new' explanation sheet is interesting, but for me there is a very
sharp demarcation between the mark of 2 and 1, a little along the lines of -
4, excellent 3, good 2, okay 1, ZOMG THEY WERE TERRIBLE.

Cheers

Santa

* I'm sorry if I'm taking this the wrong way, but is it just me that finds
this sort of demarcation a little patronising; along the lines of 'we play
better than you so we know more about this sort of thing' ?
