Basically, as you probably expected, the answer is all going to come
down to compromises. A proper cross-over, i.e. one followed by a QF, is
7 games. 7 games means games of less than 90 minutes (as you'll notice
in the C-tour).
A crossover for the team in 9th means shorter games for all of the top 8.
We took the view that the B-tour is relatively stable in terms of who is
likely to win promotion (and I say this as someone who'll be playing in
the B9-16 bracket this weekend). It was a close call - we definitely
considered whether B should be open pools or peer pools, whether we
should have a crossover or not, but in the end we felt that the best
choice was to give teams 6 closely-fought games across the weekend.
You'll note that our stated intentions for the tour are as follows
(from http://www.ukultimate.com/club_ultimate/uku_competition_structure)
* Multiple-event competition structure - at least three events -
that aims to produce an annual UK Ranking list across all teams
that compete in it.
* Tournament formats will be constrained to ensure there will be a
high proportion of competitive games.
* Focused towards teams/clubs that have reasonable level of
stability: likely to enter more than one of the events, with
stable club rosters regardless of event location
plus a couple of points that don't impact on schedules. Note
particularly the second one.
Our intention is to support clubs who send consistent teams, not
necessarily to provide opportunities for huge seeding jumps
(particularly post-T1). We believe that in the C-tour, the balance is
towards more teams benefiting from an open tournament; but we believe
that in the B-tour, more teams will benefit from a tight schedule with
multiple competitive, full-length matches.
