Hi all, I admit that the tone of Paul’s email was rather heavy but I think it’s important to note that it’s not just one club. There are plenty of clubs in the UK that train and compete with juniors and in particular university teams who compete in club open competitions and have juniors. U20’s does not just consist of children but seniors who are fully entitled to play with other seniors at their level.
I think everyone can appreciate the fact the calendar is considerably busy, but in just looking either side of the 19th & 20th on ukultimate & ffindr; you have Aber Petting Zoo on the 12th & 13th of November, Iron Five on the 10th & 11th, or Great Barr Crawl on the 17th & 18th of December, which although not ideal would be better tournaments to run GB trails alongside as these are less “serious” tournaments. And in the New Year, there is a whole array of free dates or other less “serious” tournaments to overlap too. I don’t deny that UKU do so much work for Ultimate – especially behind the scenes – and put in so much effort – no one does! But I think this is clearly an example for the need to have a calendar produced and sent out early in the season so that dates don’t have to clash. And more importantly this seems like a devastating oversight on the part of the GB coaches, and I would hope there was scope to move the date so that they don’t have to clash! I think what Paul was trying to highlight is the lack of communication coming from GB Junior Coaches; the short notice of the training day last weekend, poor notice of the next and why it's clashing with UKU Indoor Qualifiers and just the lack of transparency in the decision making process. I know there are plenty of people talking about this at the moment and I only hope that this can open up a discussion regarding this subject. I don’t want to sound like I am complaining about the GB Junior coaches or UKU because I know they did an astounding job in Europe this summer and provide the juniors with great opportunities, I just think it would help if things were clearer and dates were announced earlier: I think that would benefit so many people.
