Hi So - this is going to sound a little miserable and a bit preachy - so apologies for that - but it is important.
If hearing that LWL is cancelled makes you think about arranging a spontaneous multi-team "tournament" somewhere else please take care not to damage fields and the sport's reputation. In particular the position of ultimate players to use Clapham Common as an informal place to practice is precarious. We know that some of the Rangers in the park feel that organised ultimate tournaments are played in the park from time to time. This is not allowed, and having sat in meetings with those guys I'm pretty sure they would be happy to have an excuse to squeeze ultimate in that area. They have a pretty negative perception of ultimate right now - partly because they think we organise competitions there, and partly because they believe we have no respect for the fields and continue playing whatever the weather and state of the ground. I can't stop you doing it of course - its a public park. But I would think in particular that any club that uses Clapham Common for practices would be particularly sensitive to this problem. And clearly there is a broader question beyond Clapham Common. You may know that in the 90s, Ultimate exploded in Vancouver. There are more ultimate players in Vancouver (population similar to or less than Bristol, Leeds, Manchester?) - than there are in the UK. We know that one of the keys to their rapid and continued growth was that the community did a brilliant job of working with the organisations that looked after the fields. We know that right now - we are a long way from that level of partnership in London! The ground is frozen solid, and is unsafe to play. Also there is a fairly strong likelihood of snow tonight or tomorrow. I'm sorry to disappoint everyone but we would rather players were safe. Thanks.
