This has been mentioned before - but Kev Lowe is having to step down from the UKU Board after many years of tireless work to develop junior ultimate in the UK.
No doubt many current players across an increasingly wide age-range could talk about how Kev helped get them started, or gave them opportunities to play ultimate at home and/or for GB Juniors. But I have a more pressing problem. We really need to find a replacement for Kev on the UKU Board. We're not looking for someone to take on all the things that Kev has done in recent years - but we are looking for someone to take the board position that is responsible for the junior-related activities across UK Ultimate. Ideally we hope to find someone with experience of working with young people, because probably the most important aspect of this role is in ensuring that we have all the appropriate safeguards in place in and around junior ultimate - that includes our clubs and coaches - not just GB Juniors. You don't need to be a current player - in fact not being a current player is probably an advantage. There are lots of things in place - so you don't have to build everything from scratch. I promise! There are many really interesting things happening in and around junior ultimate right now - most notably at the moment we have some great opportunities to take ultimate into more and more schools. The next things that need to happen are that we put more networks in place to help schools get started and increase ultimate in and out of curriculum time; and that we find ways to connect those schools into the ultimate community. Right now we have a thriving scene of schools and junior clubs that play and contribute players to GB Juniors. But we have many many more schools that play ultimate that have no idea or visibility of any of those things and with whom we have very little contact. If you are interested, or would like to know more - I intend to hold a very simple (and given the weather, probably quick) discussion at the end of play on Saturday at T2 about all this. Given that there are two different timings in the schedule, I'll make sure I'm there at 18:00-18:30 and 18:45-19:15 for anyone that is kind enough to come along. Mainly my aim is to recruit a new Kev J - this is not intended to be a meeting about all-things-junior-ultimate! Please pass this message on to other people you think might be interested or very good... Naturally if anyone wants to come forwards but isn't in Nottingham this weekend that is fine - please just email or call.
