GB U17 Boys 2013 – Trials – Saturday 23rd March 2013 The trials for the GB U17 Boys team for 2013 will take place on Saturday 23rd March at Hill West Primary School in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. This is just round the corner from The Arthur Terry School where trials for the GB U17 Girls team will be taking place at the same time. Hopefully this will minimise the impact of travel commitments on parents and teachers, on whom many of the U17 athletes rely for transport.
The trials will be the selection for the squad that will attend the European Youth Ultimate Championships (EYUC) in Cologne, Germany running from the 5thto the 12thAugust. The squad will be coached at the tournament by Jolyon Thompson (Jo) and James Wolverson (Wolfe), and managed by Andrew Payne. WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE TRIALS? Hill West Primary School Clarence Road Sutton Coldfield West Midlands B74 4LD See http://www.hillwest.bham.sch.uk/contact_us.htmlfor more information on the venue. The trials will take place between 11am and 4:00pm – please arrive from 10.30 to allow time to boot up and complete all necessary administration. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Any boys born in 1997 or later are eligible to play at EYUC. UKU’s GB selection policies also state that an athlete must be in school Year 8 or above / aged 12 or above in order to be considered. However please be realistic. Competition for places is going to be tight, and with the pressure to pick a team in just one day, the coaches only want to see players with a realistic chance of being selected to the squad this year. At the recent U17 Indoor Championships 2013 there was a marked drop between the top 4 teams and those finishing 5thand below. GB U17 coaches were at the tournament and anticipate that clubs finishing outside the top 4 are unlikely to have more than a couple of players in contention this year. To give an indication, just 2 players each from the teams that finished 6thand 8thwill be at the trials. So while anyone from any team who has a chance of being selected as one of the top 20 players in the age bracket for 2013 is welcome to attend, coaches are encouraged to exercise discretion about who they send. Please do not send players who will end up wasting their day, and the time of the coaches who will have a tough enough job on their hands without looking at people who are not in real contention for places. WHAT ARE OUR AIMS FOR THE SEASON? A large proportion of the squad from the 2012 have graduated to the U20 age group. Therefore the team in 2013, while retaining a core of players from last year, will have a number of spaces to compete for. After a hard fought 5th place finish in 2012, we want to ensure a semi-final spot and challenge for medals in 2013. We want to win! WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? We are looking for committed people who demonstrate as many of the following as possible attributes: willingness to listen and learn, athleticism, game awareness, natural talent, team/squad need, individual area(s) of strength to bring to a team, and other criteria as applicable (e.g. leadership). HOW DO YOU SIGN UP? In order to attend trials, we first need to find out some basic information about you.
