If you're not registered to brlcad-commits, I thought you might find it 
informative that John Anderson (one of the BRL-CAD devs) just implemented 
tessellation support for the DSP (terrain) primitive.  That should fix the 
problem you ran into.

You should be able to compile from the latest SVN sources and get g-stl working 
(or wait until the next binary release).
