Yes, one of the GSoC students has been working on restructuring the build system and is in the middle of something at the moment. Since that's a dev branch, it doesn't have as strict a need to maintain that same level of compilability. That said, it shouldn't be broken for too much longer.. he's on the list if there's something more to be discussed.
