Keep in mind that the autotools build should still "succeed" until it has gone through our full deprecation process and can be removed. That means that "make" and "make distcheck" should complete without dumping an error. Disabling code (adding it to EXTRA_DIST) is a viable interim solution, though the migration you made should just be a minor edit to the src/Makefile.am file (and maybe configure.ac).
