There were small cosmetic changes that were easier to do than to explain, see them here: https://github.com/ncsaba/python-brlcad/commit/7b8cf2d925cd7a9aef16131c7d322642d94ad150 In particular the use_brlcad_malloc=True part is not needed, seems like the mk_vol call is not freeing the passed in matrix.
