By now, our GSoC selections have been announced. As everyone should now be
notified, and we ultimately accepted 11 students this year. Particularly
exciting this year, as our selections include students for LibreCAD, OpenSCAD,
and STEPcode!

Thank you to everyone that applied, commented on, responded to, and prepared
applications for GSoC this year. Thank you to the mentors for engaging all of
our candidates and helping to expand student proposals into viable projects.
It was very hard to narrow down our candidates to just a few, but most students
should now have a rough idea of why you were or were not selected based on the
feedback and comparison of your efforts to those selected in years prior. If
anyone has doubts or inquiry, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

If you didn't get selected, there are many other opportunities to get involved
that I hope you'll consider. We've had several students in prior years not get
accepted only to become involved in some other capacity (including future GSoC
selections). This could be you. Regardless, I'd like to express a sincere
thank you for your efforts and hope that you remain involved in open source
regardless of it being with BRL-CAD or one of our collaborating communities.
You don't need GSoC or permission to get involved with open source software
development. Find your own code garden to work in.

Those of you that were selected, don't let it go to your head. You have a LOT
of work ahead of you. :) Everyone worked hard and we appreciate everyone's
efforts, but this really is just the beginning. See the acceptance e-mail and
our checklist to get started. Remember that now is the time to be doing any
research your project requires, do tiny tasks to obtain commit access (if
working for BRL-CAD), and become even more intimately familiar by turning your
proposal into a project plan. That way, when it's time to start writing code,
you're writing code and not reading websites or asking questions. You should
know what you need to do by then. Please upload your proposal to our wiki
before next weekend so we can send out announcements. I'll be bugging some of
you individually to clean up your public project description that gets
displayed in Melange.

If anyone has any questions, please send me or one of the other mentors a note,
publicly or privately. Once you get to work on your task, please keep
discussions public and open.

Cheers!
Sean
