This would be a great project to work on. There was an effort several years
ago to implement a raytracing display manager in BRL-CAD so you could show 3D
shaded displays instead of a wireframe. The proof of concept worked, but was
never made ready for production use.
If you look at the “rtgl” code in src/libdm and src/mged, you’ll see where it
was left off. You certainly don’t have to take that approach or even use that
code, but it might be a helpful reference.
