GSoC Mentors,
A) Please be sure to sign up on Melange (google-melange.com) as a mentor for
BRL-CAD and create your profile too [1]. Anyone with commit rights or is a
designated core contributor to one of our five umbrella orgs may be a mentor.
The main criteria is at least 10 hours a week availability, strong familiarity
with the org, ability to review student progress, and a productive facilitator
for getting questions answered. You must keep tabs on where they are in their
project and be a beacon for where they need to go to become successful
contributors.
B) Look over the ideas page [2] and add your name as a potential mentor next to
any ideas you are willing to mentor, on at least a few topics. Add yourself to
the bottom of the ideas page too. For BRL-CAD, I will be adding a section of
“strategic priorities”, which our mentors should consider first. However, any
topic is fair game if it interests you and if there’s a strongly qualified
student demonstrating competency.
C) Engage students now! Encourage as much discussion as possible immediately;
applications officially open in 2 weeks. The students need ample time to
become familiarized with your code, compile, discuss, and work on an impressive
patch / pull request. Students without a code contribution will have a lower
proposal ranking. They should be submitting enough of a code change that you
get a feel for their ability to *both* read your code and modify it
competently. This should nominally be 2-3 days effort on their part.
Please do ABC before next week so we’re squared away and I have a gist for slot
requests. We’re aiming for a 2:1 mentor-to-student ratio.
Cheers!
Sean
