If you get far enough on your project, I’ll strongly be encouraging you to submit your results for publication. As mentioned, coherent full-path (multi-hit) solid ray tracing and optimized boolean weaving in particular are rather unexplored areas of research. If anything, your work to upgrade a 2nd generation to a new pipeline would almost certainly be a candidate for USENIX or a software management journal at a minimum. Cheers!
