Hi All (especially Mentors),
Just wanted to let you know that GSoC 2016 is under way and orgs will be
announced in a couple hours. With that, we’ll likely see an influx of new
folks here — some of which have already introduced themselves — so please
welcome them and help them define a useful project. We’ll be selecting a
minimum of students this year, so those that are the easiest to work with and
independently motivated will be favored.
Modified code in the form of a patch submission or pull request is required
this year. Try to encourage submissions that constitute a few days of effort
so it’s clear what their ability level is, how they interact, and that they
scope a project accordingly. Priority topics still need to be updated on the
wiki, but are nominally topics that promote one of the following development
areas:
1) ray tracing performance (continuation of costa’s work last summer), namely
coherent boolean evaluation
2) robust polygonal export (either working on libnmg, replacing nmg boolean
eval, or nurbs boolean eval)
3) geometry/image conversion (continuation of current effort, gcv step/iges
plugin, icv plugins)
4) dimensioning and annotations for engineering drawings (must be detailed and
specific)
5) online geometry viewer (also a continuation, but must be very specific in
goals and integration)
If they ask for project suggestions, feel free to steer them towards something
that supports one of those five areas. Those fit in with our new strategic
development priorities (see doc/STRATEGY) and will help BRL-CAD be more usable
for specific purposes.
Cheers!
Sean
