Hi All,

Thank you to all of you interested in participating in GSoC that have already
introduced yourselves! Welcome. Most of you have asked how to get started and
introducing yourself is a good first step. So what next?

Well be sure you’re going through our checklist if you’ve not seen it already:
http://brlcad.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Checklist

Next, think about which of our six participating sub-orgs you want to work
with: BRL-CAD, OpenSCAD, LibreCAD, STEPcode, LinuxCNC, or FreeCAD. It’s okay
if you don’t know yet. Just understand that each of those represent different
code bases, different developers, and you won’t have time to get to know all of
them to the depth necessary for writing a solid proposal. Focus on two at most.

You’ll want to get to know the development teams that you’ll potentially be
joining. Get to know the source code well enough so you can write a proposal
for proposing some improvement. To do that, you’ll want to actually work on
some useful code change that relates to a project you want to work on.
Demonstrating your ability to modify the code you are proposing to change is a
critical part of your application.

Through everything, productive communication reigns. You’re among relatively
quiet introverts that don’t naturally aspire to talk, but GSoC requires us to
get to know each other *really* fast. Don’t be terrified, don’t be shy, ask
useful questions. Understand that you will need to speak up and speak up often
and in useful, meaningful, productive ways, so we can work together to solve
technical problems and make better software.

This of course must come in balance. Please don’t ask to be guided — that’s
passive learning. We don’t have time for that. Asking a question without
doing any basic investigation yourself also sucks. Asking informed questions
that show you’ve done your homework is awesome. Most open source communities
want you to become independently productive yet collaborative so others know
what you’re working on and are in agreement with how you’re going about things.

Hope that helps and look forward to hearing from more of you!

Cheers!
Sean
