Mentors obviously need to have some basic ability to get student’s questions
answered when they’re stuck (directly or indirectly), review their progress and
level of activity, and provide encouragement and testing. Mentors must be
willing to volunteer without compensation approximately 10 hours a week on
average, 1 hour a day with more during proposals, midterm, and final evals.
Mentors don’t have to be able to answer in-depth technical questions, but they
should be able to get the answers (e.g., with the assistance of other
developers or via research as needed). Mentors obviously should be motivated
and willing.

The number of available mentors bears heavily on the number of students
accepted as the desired ratio of mentors to students is 2:1. This ensures that
students get proper attention. Last year, we did not stick to that ratio and
undesirable consequences were quite evident.

Anyone interested in being a mentor that has not already responded should send
me back an e-mail in private.

Cheers!
Sean
