Hi Reddy, I’d be glad to provide you feedback and commend you for your bravery, for not being afraid to discuss it publicly. This is how open source operates best. I will try to itemize those salient characteristics of your proposal, but the gist is that you did great work but we simply couldn’t accept everyone. As that’s rather vague, let’s get into some details: Your proposal write-up was fantastic. Honestly, it was easily one of the best organized, well written, aesthetically pleasing, and detailed proposals received this year. Your writing skills are top notch. Similarly, your patch was phenomenally adequate — better than adequate. It demonstrated you are more than capable of delivering on what you proposed. You provided lots of good fixes that will be applied to the sources and your name will be credited in our authorship documentation. If we had more mentors, your proposal would have been selected. What your proposal lacked is integration with BRL-CAD tools. You proposed plenty of website work, all very desirable, but we really need to get it into production use, leveraged by our tools. This was not a major oversight and would have been feedback given, but you posted very late into the process (16 March) where redirecting your path would have taken more time than was available by that time. Getting involved and communicating much earlier would certainly have helped. Some of our selected applicants got involved with BRL-CAD *years* ago and have been talking and working on things throughout the years. This helped them craft even stronger proposals in areas that topically competed with yours. Had you proposed a different topic with the same vigor and detail — e.g., one of our priority focus areas announced on our list — your evaluation may have been different Again, though, earlier communication and productive interactions would have steered you in that direction as well. I hope that helps and I honestly hope you remain interested in open source and BRL-CAD. You are certainly a welcome and capable individual that has great potential to make more positive impacts like your pull request submissions. I hope this information is helpful to you.
