Hi,
I was wondering if we have a provision for a medium or an object with
variable index of refraction. I need to model a scene where I want to study the
nature of images that are traced through a medium which has a variable index of
refraction i.e. the ior varies with distance from an assumed origin. For ex. if
we want to render a mirage; the ior changes for the part of the medium close to
the road.

We do not.   You'd probably want to either define a new shader in
src/liboptical or work on integrating Appleseed with librt.  As a new
liboptical volumetric shader, the implementation would likely be similar to
BRL-CAD's procedural grass shader. [1]

Cheers!
