Hi All,

How are we feeling about GSoD projects? Please let me know ASAP so I can know
how to characterize the org proposal. For anyone that hasn’t heard the
announcement, there’s a new program similar to GSoC but for documentation where
we can get 1 or 2 professional writers to work with us for a couple months on
some project.

I’d love to give this new program a try as we have massive quantities of
documentation that are massively disorganized. I was brainstorming some
possible project ideas and a few come to mind.

One would be to tackle one of our DOCUMENTATION section items in the TODO file,
like creating a guide to all BRL-CAD primitives or an Intro to BRL-CAD that
covers concepts more quickly and broadly than the MGED Tutorial Series.
Another idea would be to get *all* existing documentation simply organized and
presented online. Another more technical idea would be to revisit the work
from a few years ago that presented and set up bidirectional editing of our
Docbook docs.

I’d be happy to write up the project descriptions for our application, but
wondering who all might be interested in mentoring. We need 2-4 people to
mentor and unlike GSoC, code familiarity isn’t as essential as is availability
to help educate the technical writer on where things are, how to checkout from
repo, how to compile docs, how the website is set up, etc.

Cheers!
Sean
