Hi,

your comment on IRC
Oleg,
Your comments on IRC, while you claimed as being respectful, are
disrespectful to the spirit of GCI and open source participation. My
perception is that you have some expectation that needs to be adjusted. I
understand your excitement and frustration, but your impatience does not
place your tasks in priority over other tasks. ALL tasks are reviewed,
commented on, and discussed in the order in which they are submitted
throughout the day, every day.
So far, we've responded to every single comment and submission in less than
24 hours, most within just a few hours or even minutes.
This is ultimately a contest with several dozen participants involved on
any given day. We strive to be fair and responsive to the efforts of ALL
participants equally and reasonably, within capacity and time constraints.
This will mean that tasks may at times be processed a little more slowly in
the first few days because there is just so much activity by so many
people. As things slow down, you'll find responses coming back more quickly
and more time for interactive discussion on IRC, especially if you're one
of our finalists.
It has nothing to do with not appreciating your time and effort in the
least.
Your claim on IRC that we're not respecting your time was indeed rather
offensive. Open source participation is predominantly volunteer effort.
Moreover, we're actually not participating in GCI to have you do work for
us. We're here to help introduce you and others to open source software
development.
Open source is all about communication.
If you have aspirations for doing more work under GCI, we can certainly
talk about that and keep you busy as much as you like. Our winning
participant last year completed nearly 50 tasks before GCI was over not
just because his work was outstanding but he was exceptionally good at
communicating with our development team. We kept him busy with tasks day
and night, several per day most days, and now he's an official BRL-CAD
developer.
Understanding the nuances of your participation, the impact of your work,
and the effects of your communications wil help you become an effective
open source contributor. The better you communicate, the better you will do
in GCI.
We can discuss this further on IRC, publicly or in private, if you so
desire.
Greetings,
The Google Open Source Programs Team
