Ivan, I actually like your first version more, for a variety of reasons. :)
The dominant is probably that it's more abstract in nature whereas the
planet one is much more busy and detracts from the text, plus it raises
legal questions whether we'd be able to use it.
Regardless, this is looking interesting. I particularly like the crispness
on the "BRL-CAD" in the first design. You've done enough work already, but
would you consider trying one more approach? I'd really like to see your
first design with a much more subtle and lighter (handmade) background.
Even a crisp radial gradient might work. It just needs to be something a
lot lighter (but not too light or you'll lose the white glow effect). Also,
you don't need two bylines. Try dropping the open source solid modeling
byline as well as the url (this is a splash screen, not a business card),
recentering, and seeing how that all looks. Be creative, find something you
love. Think geometric.
I guess this whole "think, invent, create" byline movement is starting to
catch on..
