Yeah, that is usually perfectly fine. Alternatively, you can tell configure where X11 is using the --with-x11="/usr/X11" during configure. The end result should be pretty much the same as setting the symbolic link. If there's a problem finding X11 during configure, it will complain in the output. Look for any sections that begin with }}}}}}}}}}... as well as the summary output at the end to make sure X11 support is enabled.
