Hi Rick, answers in following. On Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 02:47PM, <[email protected]> wrote: > > Rick Pember sent a message using the contact form at > http://brlcad.org/d/contact. > >We're evaluating whether to use BRL-CAD. I have some questions: > >1) does it have a batch mode?
Yes, our modeler (called MGED) has a pretty extensive batch mode. You can see a sampling of some of the scripting possibilities at http://brlcad.org/wiki/SGI_Cube You can script MGED externally in pretty much any language (Bash, Perl, Python, DOS batch, Ruby, etc) and internally using Tcl. >2) Does it come with a Parasolid writer? If so, does it generate native >format or a triangularization? No, sorry. We don't support any proprietary formats directly for a variety of reasons. We presently have exporters for the following formats: acad (not autocad), dxf, euclid, iges, jack, nff, obj, off, stl, tankill, vrml, x3d Most of those formats are, of course, inherently polygonal formats and require tessellation. IGES obviously doesn't but non-polygonal support is experimental/limited. The X3D format could support a subset, but the format doesn't yet support booleans (which are pervasive in our representation). We are in the process of implementing STEP and 3DM exporters that will write non-polygonal format geometry, presently tackling boolean evaluation of BREP/NURBS objects. Like most CAD systems, our import support is stronger than our export support. ;-) >3) Is the method I'm using now the best way to ask questions of a real >person? (We don't want to use IRC.) Not really. Normally contact form support questions are ignored, but you seem genuinely interested with valid questions. I'd suggest either joining the brlcad-users mailing list [1] for general inquiries or submitting a support request ticket [2] for specific questions: [1] https://sourceforge.net/projects/brlcad/lists [2] https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=105292&atid=640803 Cheers!
