Here's an interesting article that posted to the Nikon Metrology blog
on SURVICE Engineering's efforts to develop metrology tools and
methodology related to BRL-CAD:

collection-and-analysis-with-igps-scanning-system-2/

The "Archer" graphics package they developed for their Phase I SBIR
(Small Business Innovative Research) effort is the same toolset that
was contributed to BRL-CAD as open source back in 2005. A *lot* has
changed since then, but the article provides an interesting
perspective showing how seemingly unrelated needs can be
collaboratively developed through open source.

The BRL-CAD developers have been building on that initial Archer
effort for our next generation geometry modeling interface since 2005
and we're now quickly approaching an alpha development status. Stay
tuned for announcements where we actively solicit community feedback.
