Install ecasound and ladspa-sdk and try:
$ ecasound -i null -o alsa -pn:metronome,[DESIRED_BPM] 
(hit ctrl-c to exit; there's also an interactive mode)

That's a preset; you could tweak parameters if you don't like the
default sound.

Ecasound is an extremely powerful engine which is all controllable from
the command line. A real boon to all those who are GUI-averse.
