download? I'd rather start with something that someone else has had

Good morning all,
I have an ALVA 80-cell display that I'd like to use with my windows 10
computer with NVDA and some ham radio software. I have the choice of
the old style serial or parallel connections. I'd like to plug in the
display and be able to test to see if the computer is talking to the
display. Wonder if someone could suggest what I might do to make such a
test?
