Thank you Aura for the very detailed feedback! Regarding the technology involved it reminds me very old mechanical displays I saw in telephone switchboard operated by visually impaired persons. There are three things in what you said that make me think about this technology: the time it takes to refresh, the noise, and the fact that a touch would alter the refresh.
