Hi Halim, thanks for the hint. This change had slipped my mind but now, that you mention it, I remember reading about it.
Indeed, I can confirm that $ systemctl --user status orca reports orca being active when running the gnome-session and orca being inactive when running mate. In the latter case, orca is running alright, albeit not managed by systemd. Well, I think I should take this to the orca list and possibly file a bug, too. My braille issues apparently are just the symptom, so thank you for drawing my attention to the environment variables and systemd in relation to orca.
