You mentioned having had dependency problems when building brltty. There's 
actually an easy way to make sure that everything you need is installed. From 
brltty's top-level directory, run this command as root:

   Tools/reqpkgs -i

The -i option means install. If you'd like to see what'll be installed without 
actually doing it then use the -l option to just list the package names instead.
