It doesn't hurt to be thorough but I bet ncurses-term was all you needed.

Try one of these approaches:

* Log in as root and run it.
* Run it via sudo but add brltty's -z option. So: sudo run-brltty -z

That's fine and is expected as you aren't invoking the installed brltty via 
systemd.
