In theory, yes, but in practice, no. There was a serious bug in the Baum driver
in 5.3.1 which was fixed in 5.4.

Yes, I would suggest upgrading if possible before assuming that your Brailliant is defective. I have a brailliant 40, and iirc brltty 5.3.1 worked with my display if it was started manually after the display was attached, but trying to have it start automatically via udev would make brltty abort.
