Well, I did
apt-get remove openoffice.org*
on my test box and problems are fixed.
On my new box it is using an older version of oo though, when this is 
upgraded will it be broken like before?
I think this is what happened last time.

If you run upgrade then can you still use firefox? (with alt d to get in 
the address bar?)
(perhaps do a sudo apt-get install openoffice.org) first or whatever if 
you don't have OO, but if it breaks just do a
apt-get remove openoffice.org*
and your problems will be fixed.

Also, the older version works fine on my new box, but in the apt-get 
upgrade openoffice and oo writer will be upgraded so I am worried this 
will break things from previous installations, like last night... :-)
