Hello folks

--This one got me really stomped!-- I am
at present setting up a gentoo linux box
(AMD64 dual core; gentoo 2008.0 beta)
for my disabled wife. Setting up the base system
--including gnome, orca, brltty etc. -- was a breeze:
emerging all went clean and swift. At the first
trial session, orca an gnome worked perfectly in tandem,
speech followed the terminal; openoffice proved accessible.

But then trouble came:
When started manually, brltty complained: no usb device.

Running lsusb yielded:

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0798:0001 Optelec Braille Voyager

So the hardware was detected. Hotplugging an USB mouse
into whatever available USB device rapidly activated the
mouse. After replugging the braille terminal it presented
its name and serial number, but nothing more.

My hunch is that there is something dastardly wrong with
the assignment of USB devices, but I simply can't find what it is.
I have tried linking /dev/net/usb to /dev/usb, with or without
its specific subdirectories, but all to no avail.

Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Hans Pelleboer
