This question has two possible answers. One is that it's safest to make only 
one big change at a time, so, maybe, that'll happen in the future. The other, 
on the other hand, is that it's not necessary because we now support Unicode, 
and that we may eventually get rid of the "byte" definitions altogether. I 
personally prefer the latter, i.e. getting rid of "byte" definitions, although, 
for the time being, they must still be supported because users have private 
tables which use it.
