I have not mentioned the symptoms in my initial mail.
So, for the record, when I ran autoconf, you get:
/usr/bin/m4:configure.ac:72: bad expression in eval: brltty_help_prefix+0
/usr/bin/m4:configure.ac:88: bad expression in eval: brltty_help_prefix+0
/usr/bin/m4:configure.ac:113: bad expression in eval: brltty_help_prefix+0
/usr/bin/m4:configure.ac:119: bad expression in eval: brltty_help_prefix+0
etc., the error message is repeated several dozen times.
