During an install. I believe you said the damage persisted until you did a 
reset. I have no idea what kind of probing those various components do. It's 
just a guess. Serial port probing is most often done when looking for a mouse.

Who knows. Looking for a serial mouse connected via an adapter, though, does 
seem like something the isntaller might do.
