Tat is not correct. I never had a hardware speech synthesizer, but used both emacspeak and yasr with no problem. Emacspeakspeak has several speech servers that work with software speech. Yasr can work with emacspeak servers too, and, AFAIK, also has support for speech dispatcher. Besides, speakup now supports software speech too, and there are some other solutions available that provide software speech for the linux console. Hope this helps.
