Sorry for the delay in getting back to folks but work has been going
through the 12 hour day thing for the past few weeks which leaves little
time for helping on anything.
Anyway is there an easy way to set it up so the dev version of brltty can
be put in a debian package so it just replaces my current copy without
having to move everything around by hand?

This shouldn't be a problem. I myself always run the latest development code
for brltty all the time.
Please let me know when you're ready to do some testing, which, I assume, means
when you have built the latest development code and have some available time.
