Most books on Linux system administration should have a chapter that explains
how daemons are started and stopped. Unfortunately, there are three systems in
use for this currently, and which is relevant depends on your distribution:
System V Init, Upstart (Ubuntu) and Systemd (Fedora, OpenSuse, Debian in some
configurations, Arch Linux).

Did you check that the compilation completed successfully before running make
install?
