Sorry to continue an off-topic subject, but I've tried other places,
including a Ubuntu suppost list, with no results. The following commands
were sent to me for making Gnome start Orca when it starts itself.

eval $(dbus-launch)
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID
GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications
screen-reader-enabled true

I get the error message "No protocol specified."

The real culprit in all this is gnomme.org which is blocking the
outgoing mail server provided by my web-hosting company, thus preventing
me from posting to the Orca list.
